An important part of growing up for children is learning to go to the toilet by themselves. In fact, schools will often only accept children who are potty trained and no longer wearing diapers.

Children are usually potty trained at 2 years old and should no longer be wetting their bed. Unfortunately, learning to control your bladder is a very complex process, even more than learning to walk.

Medicating your child is not always the best solution. Rehabilitation with a specialist physiotherapist is indeed more efficient.

Bedwetting treatment in children suffering from nocturnal enuresis, with our paediatric physiotherapist at your home in London

At Baby Physio in London, our paediatric physiotherapist is highly trained and experienced with nocturnal enuresis and incontinence in children. She will offer a treatment plan combining playful exercises and gentle techniques, which will be efficient for your child. The treatment plan is also tailored to your child’s personality.

Bedwetting can be difficult to discuss for both child and parents, but it is important to talk to a specialist. It is as much of a neuro-motor issue as it is a psychological one that can be treated perfectly well with rehabilitation adapted to your child’s needs.

What is nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting?

Nocturnal enuresis is more commonly called bedwetting.

Causes can be:

  • A sleep too deep
  • Micturition reflex not yet developed
  • Psychological and emotional
  • Deformation of the urinary tract

Nocturnal enuresis can happen at night but also during the day if it is linked to urinary problems. This is called day wetting and happens when your child cannot hold it and subsequently wets their pants.

Other issues related to enuresis can occur in children and adults:

  • Bowel or faecal incontinence
  • Constipation (absence of bowel movements for at least 3 days)

These rectal problems can be caused by the following:

  • Diet
  • Psychological problems
  • Weak perineum muscles
  • Weak abdominals

The above issues also have an impact on the nocturnal enuresis in children. Rehabilitation will therefore be a global treatment.

How does physiotherapy treat bedwetting?

If constipation and faecal incontinence are present, those will be treated first.

Treatment will be a combination of the following:

  • Behavioral reeducation: analysis of the drinking/urinating relation, correction of bad habits and possible fear of urinating, praise when progress are made
  • Non invasive manual reeducation of the urethra
  • Reeducation with biofeedback to teach the child how to feel contraction and relaxation of the sphincter
  • Reeducation with electrical stimulation if in presence of an overactive bladder
  • Abdo- MG reeducation for a better abdominal efficiency in cases where the child has a habit of obstructing this area

Both assessment and reeducation will always take place with a parent being present, in order to lessen anxiety levels for the child.

As an important part of growth, any progress in this area will always be praised, but it is essential that parents and child are actively involved for a positive outcome.
