When shall my baby be assessed and treated for birth trauma by the osteopath?

The earliest a baby is assessed and treated with osteopathy, the easiest it is to fix the different issues that traumatic birth could have created. But if you haven’t done it yet, it is never too late to do it and realign your baby’s body and energy.

NOTE: In general, we advise that all babies have at least one osteopathy check up and treatment after delivery. It allows the baby to start their life with the best balanced body and avoid them to deal with underlying issues such as reflux, sleeping difficulty, stress and torticollis for example.

What is Baby Traumatic Birth?

The most common traumas affecting your baby during childbirth are generally musculoskeletal related – neck, shoulder, head are parts of the body that are more likely to be injured. However, other types of injuries can also occur and leave the baby physically and psychologically unsettled.

The most common baby birth traumas include:

  • A difficult delivery where medical intervention is required (ventouse, forcteps) and can end up by giving the baby plagiocephaly (flat head)
  • Breech birth (when the baby is born bottom first instead of head first, which most often leads to a caesarean section)
  • Very long or very fast delivery
  • Any physical or emotional traumas after delivery

Postnatal Cranial Osteopathy check-up for mothers after difficult delivery in London

By focusing on rebalancing the baby’s body structure and therefore any agitation or irritability they might feel, cranial Osteopathy will automatically improve even a little bit the mother’s state as well. A happier baby will lead to a less stressed mum. But a Traumatic Birth can have other physical (back pain, pelvic pain) and psychological effects (postnatal depression) on mothers. This is why it is important as well to request a Women Postnatal osteopathy check-up, in order to improve both sides and prevent any complications before they get worse.

Baby Traumatic Birth and C-Section

In many situations, a baby born with C-section can also benefit from a realignment as in most scenarios, C-section is performed because the baby is in difficulty and has experienced distress, even before the C-section is performed.

How to recognise the signs of a baby suffering from Traumatic Birth

In most cases, the baby’s body will be tense and they will manifest their irritability by crying excessively and pulling themselves backward (commonly called “in banana shape”.

Traumatic Birth can also lead to:

  • Feeding difficulties
  • Poor sleep
  • Bonding issues
  • Digestive problems such as diarrhoea, constipation, colic or reflux
  • Unbalanced body structure (torticollis or flat head resulting from difficult birth)
  • Baby neurological conditions
  • Baby developmental delay (cerebral palsy)
  • Baby brachial plexus injury
  • Lack of baby head control

How our Paediatric Cranial Osteopath in London and cranial osteopathy can help your baby with traumatic birth?

Cranial Osteopathy is a gentle and manual therapy focusing on relaxing the structure of the baby’s body and re-aligning its imbalance by releasing tension on specific areas. Depending on the initial assessment, our paediatric osteopath in London will use different techniques such as structural or cranial osteopathy.

By assessing the baby with a post birth check-up, the osteopath will be able to catch the issues and prevent them from turning into long lasting consequences, which could then potentially end up in more laborious and demanding sessions in order to treat them all.
